Ready for the real facts? Some practical, easily applicable rules to follow that are going to help you get where you are going? Good! Using a road trip as an analogy of a journey towards a goal, please read on…
Get a Car that you like driving.
There’s an old song that tells us that the road is long, and with many a winding turn as well, apparently. Your journey towards your goals will be long and windy too. So you had better be driving a car that you like. So, do you like the “vehicle” that is taking you towards your goal? Say you have chosen to lose weight by going to the gym, but you HATE the gym. How likely is success then? Pretty small, you would have to say. So you need to find a vehicle that you DO like. Playing tennis? Walking? Tae Kwon Do?
Learn to drive.
Pretty obvious when thinking about it in these terms, isn’t it! But it might not be as obvious when thinking about life goal success. Just like you have to learn to drive a car, you are going to have to learn the rules of success. Reading this article is a good start, but you have to continue learning for the rest of your life. You have to learn how to drive your life. So, start now to make a lifelong study of success. Read books, go to seminars, watch DVDs, listen to audio while driving.
Draw a route map
Also pretty obvious in this context. You wouldn’t dream of setting off somewhere unless you knew how to get there (GPS excluded, of course). But I’ll tell you something. In life, very few people have taken the time to draw a route map. They just get in their car and they just drive around, taking turns randomly and stopping randomly. They get out of the car and have a look around to find that they don’t particularly like the area. Even worse, many times they keep making the same turns and ending up at the same place that they don’t like. So, take the time to make a detailed route map of where you want to get to, and begin following it today.
Enjoy the journey
You may have heard this saying, or a variation, before, “Success is a journey, not a destination”. And it is a journey that is going to take a long time. So, it makes good sense to spend it doing something that you enjoy. For example, if you don’t enjoy your job, then find a way to get one that you DO enjoy. Spending 8 hours a day of your irreplaceable life doing something that you don’t like cannot be called “enjoying the journey”. Find something to do that you enjoy doing as soon as you possibly can. Do it now, or soon enough it might be too late.
Take some food and water
Because you are going to need energy to make that journey. And lots of it. So make sure you keep feeding yourself good nutritious foods. Cut out the junk food that you get at roadside stations. And avoiding trying to drive while drunk. And plenty of water is a must too. Water cleans you out and helps to keep you alert.
Don’t let Roadblocks stop you
There will be a lot of things in your way that are trying to stop you. And perhaps the one to mention specially is “well meaning” people. But just like you wouldn’t turn around at the first roadblock, you have to keep on going. These “well meaning” people will, sometimes for good reasons and sometimes for bad, try to stop you. They will try to “save” you from failure by telling you that you cant do it. Mostly they aren’t doing it out of badness, but do it they probably will. So, be very careful about who you tell about this journey you are going on. And be even more careful about listening to what they have to say.
There! If you were to follow these guidelines, you should find that your roadtrip is an enjoyable and fruitful one. If you were to integrate these steps into whatever it is that you are trying to achieve, I think you will find that the chances of success will increase significantly.
